Dear Friends,
Good to be back.
I have always wanted to share some ideas on economic costs and how our everyday action, however trivial it may seem, impact this by using simple-to-understand language. Let me try.
Imagine the office light(s) that we leave on today, intentionally or otherwise. It may cost the office very little in electricity bill and very well cost us 'nothing'. Or is it?
The fact is that there is a cost to the economy. One unit of electricity needs to be produced to light up the bulb. And to produce that one unit of electricity, more than one unit of resource/raw material needs to be extracted (e.g. fossil fuel such as gas, coal, etc). When the resource is getting scarer, the cost to produce that one unit of electricity will inevitably have to go up and we end up paying MORE. So, if we do not consume that one unit of electricity, the resource to produce that unit can stay underground for the next person. Isn't this GREEN?
I urge everyone of us to consider twice before ordering another can of drink or extra plate of rice. We do our part today and our children will get to enjoy more of this planet that we share.
Stay healthy and waste NOT.

HEAVEN ON EARTH
Dear Friends,
When I was taking a bite this afternoon, I remembered a meeting with a dear friend recently. He used the phrase ‘heaven on earth’ and pointed out that with simple, kind, everyday gestures and actions, we can all create heaven on earth.
Well, I wish you can stop whatever you are doing now. Take a minute and reflect on something (e.g. a song, phrases, a kind gesture, an event) that that has touched you deeply. A moment that may have make you cry or tear wells up in your eyes. Isn’t it wonderful if this moment can repeat in perpetuity?
Dear friends, let us take action today that will make our ‘small’ world a better place for us and people around us. I want you to take a baby step today. Smile to the very next person you see, be him/her a stranger or your loved ones. Greet that person. Do something that will make him/her feel better and trust me, it will definitely brighten your own day.
God bless you and your loved ones.

Damn if you do; damn if you don't
Dear Friends,
Have you ever been approached by 'physically challenged' individuals selling souvenirs and whatnot, while having meals at public places? I believe most of us have and believe me, most of us don't enjoy it at all. This is one of the classic cases of 'damn if you do; damn if you don't'.
Well, you see. We buy the souvenir (which is most likely useless) or donate some money because we try to help the 'individual' in our small way but if we turn him/her away, we feel guilty about not helping. At the back of our mind, there is always this little thought that some unscrupulous business people are trying to take advantage and profit from our guilt. Or are we naturally charitable or like to be seen as one? How about you?
May GOD bless you.

The Rich Becomes Richer while The Poor Stays the Same or Becomes Poorer
Dear Friends,
Many of us will say that this world and life is never fair. We always ask, "why do the rich gets richer while the poor gets poorer when both put in equal amount of work?" In fact, most of the time, the poors seem to have it tougher in term of labour and time at work.
Well, of course as usual, I do not have an answer. However, my two cents worth is that the nature works fairly all the time. If you do not believe this to be the case, observe the people and environment around you. Take a little time to observe. There is always a reason for something to be the way it is, the Cause and Effect if you will.
Have a good weekend. GOD bless you all.

What is your 'defining moment' in life?
Dear Friends,
I attended a very enjoyable talk recently. The speakers are some of the finest in their trades. I am always amazed by these 'successful' people who like to say that money is not everything (or in another word, 'not very important'). And it never stops me from thinking that there is some kind of a 'conspiracy' by rich people to discourage not-so-rich people like us from working our butts out for money. But this is another story for another time.
If you have one choice only, what is your life's turning point? The so-called 'defining moment'? Enjoy pondering...
God bless you ALL.

Common Sense in Management
Dear Friends,
There was a discussion on a local radio few days ago regarding 'academic achievement' and 'street smart' in the job market. Well, my take is the former is a 'door opener' whereas the latter will see if you go far or not-far-enough. What say you...
My first exposure to management is refreshingly, what I call, 'common sense management'. It is very 'street smart' inclined and I tend to agree with this approach in management. Management gurus could write books and books on this topic. Maybe, you could drop your thoughts and exprience here??
Cheers and have a wonderful weekend.

You've spoken, "Kuching is better"
Dear friends,
You have spoken! Kuching is better than Miri. Let me offer my humble opinion why it is so. If you were to ask me, I would honestly think that Miri is a more livable city, but... I hazard to guess that most voters are from Kuching and hence, nothing beats your own HOMETOWN, not even the best cities in the whole wide world. So you have it...
See you next time,

A small poll for lovely cities
Dear Friends,
How'd life treating you lately in a foreign land? As with all things in life, some of you would have achieved many goals that you set out to achieve and some are still work-in-progress. I hope all of you will perservere and achieve greatness in life.
Maybe we should do a small survey. How about comparing Kuching and Miri? Many factors will come into play in our considerations, but lets just say, "I like Kuching better than Miri". Lets vote.
See you again friends,
SL

Top 10 List, Miri
Dear Friends,
I am not a gourmet aficionado. I am just a salaried man, trying to make ends meet, but have to eat outside all the times as I am away from my family. Many of you and I are trying to ‘eat to live’. But we prefer something that is ‘cheap, fresh and big in size’ After all, we must enjoy our food bah. Not so easy to please (who says you can please humans!!). One of the criteria that I use to compile the list is that I have eaten at these places for at least three times. Anyway, let us get on with the first-cut list in Miri (not in order of merit).
1) Hopoh Café – Kueh Chap/Chicken Curry Rice
2) Hong Kong Duck, Boulevard – Roasted Meat
3) Good Taste, Pujut 5 – Asam Curry Head
4) Meng Chai Café, Jln Merbau
5) Muara Café – Nasi Lalapan
6) Ten Mile Bak Kut Teh
7) Twin Star, Pelita
8) Wan Sin Café, Miri Waterfront
9) Wooden Shed, Pujut 2 behind Sesco – Fried Spring Chicken
10) WZT Café – Kueh Chap
Pls leave a comment and feel free to criticize my list left, right and centre.

Selamat Hari Keamatan & Gawai Dayak
Dear Friends,
I wish all our Friends "SELAMAT HARI KEAMATAN & GAWAI DAYAK". Let us think back to previous year and learn from it and improve ourselves and our lots.
And let us also takea moment to pray for our fellow humankinds who suffer greatly in the recent catastrophic natural disasters, namely the China Earthquake and Myanmar Cyclone. At a time like this, we sometimes wonder, how could Almighty let this utter devastations happen to His own children, His own creation? I know I am digressing into potentially contentious religious issue but I would like to offer this humble opinion of myself: Almighty has His own plan for us, His children. There is no doubt in this.
Happy Holidays. From, SL

Happy Worker's Day
Dear HAFM Friends,
Most of us will be going back tomorrow for the Worker's Day holiday and will also take one day leave 2/5/08. So, I wish you all Happy Holidays and try to spend quality (and quantity) time with your family and loved ones. God bless you all.
What is the origin of Worker's Day? And is it still relevant today? Anyone wish to comment? Anyway, we are glad it is a holiday, aren't we? And don't forget to thank the government (even if for today) as Malaysians are a fortunate lot with the most public holidays in the world?? Can someone verify this?

May08 airfare promotion
Dear HAFH Friends,
I booked one return flight to Kuching just now. I found AirAsia Miri-Kuching schedule has turned friendly to new time 1740hrs, but then you might still have to come back on Sundays as return Kuching-Miri at approx 7.00pm. Well, I also found that Mas flight from Kuching-Miri on Mondays at 7.00am is not that expensive at RM165. So, in May (current promotion), you might think of taking AirAsia for Miri-Kuching and then Mas for Kuching-Miri.
Or how about bus service at RM80 one-way? I tried that before and it took 14 hrs and I have to say it wasn't too bad as you could actually slept (if you tried) with a sore neck afterward (so bring along a neck rest/support).

Hello from KK
Dear HAFH Friends,
How's life this week? And I know many of you are going back today, Friday evening. I am also going back and am very exciting to be home again after two weeks. Well, I miss my wife and my kids.
A friend commented 'how about supper?' For friends lucky enough to work for the oil majors with plump salary and equally fat allowances, well you can have left, right and centre supper and maybe throw in brunch also. We have to make do with three daily meals until...
See you guys at the airport later. Cheers...
